Lancaster Livestock Auction: Store Cattle - Friday 21st August

Store Cattle

There was a full variety of cattle on offer with something to suit all long and short keep cattle purchasers. The well-meated short keep cattle continue to reach the dizzy heights of the previous weeks but with the weather now going a little bit trashy there were more weathered cattle on the market nationwide.

The trade rocketed past the £1400 mark six times topping at £1460 for a pair of Angus bullocks from JM & AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe with British Blue bullocks from the same home selling to £1410. A pair of Limousin bullocks from R Collinge & Son, Newton sold to £1440 with an Angus bullock from V & EJ Chadwick & Son, Sowerby selling to £1400 with others from the same home selling to £1390. Angus bullocks from JS Clark & Sons, Catforth sold to £1390 for a pen of four with British Blue bullocks selling to £1350 for a pen of four from P Lawrenson & Son, Chorley. Dairy bullocks saw Montbeliardes sell to £1340 from JM & AG Swarbrick. Plenty of pens of bullocks sold in the twelve hundreds.

Heifers this week topped at £1320 for Limousins from R Collinge & Son with a pen of four British Blue heifers sold to £1270 from P Lawrenson & Son. Plenty of pens of well-fleshed heifers sold over the £1200 mark.

Black and white bullocks sold to a top of £1180 from Cowell & Moore, Woodplumpton. Younger cattle continue to demand plenty of interest with 10-month-old British Blue bullocks selling to £730 from JR & A Thornton, Winmarleigh.

All cattle forward averaged £1053.

Cast Cows

There was a bumper entry of cast cows with 163 going through the ring today with an overall market average 125p/kg. Of the cattle forward 117 were dairy cows with, in general, a much plainer offering. OTM heifers led the way this week selling to a top of 217.5p/kg from D & DW Prickett, Farleton. This was closely followed British Blue steers to 199.5p/kg from JD, EM & JA Atkinson, Skelsmergh. Pure Limousin heifers sold to 194.5p/kg and 189.5p/kg from W Salisbury, Kirkham these also achieved the market top price per head of £1379 and £1288.

Other noted high prices were £1244 for Limousin OTM heifers from JM Capstick, Ashton with Stodday and cast steers to £1238 from J Bargh & Son, Heaton with Oxcliffe. Dairy cows sold to a top of £1180 for Fleckviehs from EW & RM Towers, Hornby and £1170 for Black and whites from PA & D Slater, Barnacre with Swedish Red Cows to £1156 from AW & AM Park & Sons, Ellel. Beef cows sold to £1148 and £1112 from A Dixon & Son, Selside. Best meated beef cows sold between 150p/kg and 170p/kg with best dairy cows between 140p/kg and 150p/kg.

Calves & Stirks

The weekly sale of calves this week saw a reduced entry on the week of 56 forward with the emphasis on quality rather than quantity.

Topping the sale today was E Tuer, Windermere with a strong 3-month-old Simmental bull at £615 with others at £610 and £550. Not far behind was JG Thornley Ltd, Roseacre with their usual quality from this good home selling to £475 for a British Blue heifer. Other Blue heifers today topped at £225 from D & K Howarth, Hambleton with others at £215 from B & MJ Nelson & Son, Heversham. Angus heifer calves from TL Baldwin & Son, Forton made £240 with others from the same home at £270.

British Blue bulls sold to £405 from G & ME Woodhouse & Sons, Ellel with others to £360 from JH Towers & Sons, Tunstall. Angus bulls from G & ME Woodhouse & Sons saw them top at £370 with others at £340 from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale with other younger bulls to £335 from Lawsons Farms, Cockerham.

Friesian bull calves in Lancaster today saw reared bulls making £165 from G & ME Woodhouse with younger calves to £120 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale.
